Biography: Born in 1956 in Qingdao, Shadong Province, China. He now lives and works in Beijing, China. Like many artists, Sui Jianguo was trained in the strict academic realist tradition, and is now one of the leading figures of China’s new sculpture movement. He continually explores the limits of form and function of sculpture, as well as its relation to space and viewers.
The “Made In China” series produced between 1999 and 2003 has been one of Sui Jianguo most successful. With these dinosaurs, originally red-colored, Sui Jianguo focuses on the art market and the globalization of capitalism. The prehistoric animals derive from the toy industry, and are intended to highlight the “transnational capitalist production” between the West and developing countries like China. Because these toys, originally designed in the West, are produced from raw materials in China, and sold again to the overseas market, they perfectly represent the economic model of developing countries.
